Susea loves Author School Visits . She provides an interactive experience, bringing A Big Blue Boat to life for 4-8 year olds.
The Author School Visit includes:
- A talk about what led to the writing of the book.
- The book reading
- a making activity done with the children (Small groups to 30 only. For large groups, the activity is provided for the children to take home or do in the classroom)
Each child receives:
- a bookmark
- a colouring activity
Books are made available for purchase prior to the visit. Unless stated by the purchaser, all A Big Blue Boat books purchased will be signed.
If you are wanting something a little different, she is also happy to talk how the writing process works for her, or about her sailing journey.
Rates for In Person visits 2023
$4 per student per hour for 30+.
$120 flat rate for less than 30 children.
Book an author visit for Jan – March, 2024 before October 31st, to receive the 2023 rate.

‘Susea Spray’s story “A Big Blue Boat” takes children on a wonderful adventure. It’s clever use of rhythm, and words that roll off your tongue make it fun to read and listen to. I found that even for children who live a long way from the ocean, that aren’t really familiar with boats, were provided with beautiful imagery to trigger their interest and make them want to read more and to go sailing.
Having Susea Spray visit our regional library branch, to read the book, talk about her inspiration and do some sail boat craft with the children, was a great treat. Local families were delighted to welcome the author, and the children engaged well with her as she passionately read her book. Children from infants to primary school students were entertained by this reading, and delighted to ask her questions – she certainly spurred some interest in sailing.’

Travel
First hour free.
$63 per hour for up every hour thereafter for up to a three hour return trip. Additional travel times by negotiation (country teachers see below).
Country Schools
Are you a teacher in a small country school with a very limited budget? I worked in a country school and understand how difficult this can be.
